If you had told us that we would have over 20 kids participating in the first year of the BMX series, we would have said you were crazy!  But, that is just what we did.  And, we ended the year by ripping up Rye Airfield!

We have huge things planned for 2010 and want every young person involved!

Come join the fun!

Important: Your child must wear a helmet. Kids without helmets will not be allowed to participate, sorry.

The start of the series is right around the corner and with it come a lot of questions from both parents and kids. We have prepared this little fact sheet for you to hopefully answer some of them and remove a little pre-season anxiety that many of you may be feeling.

This is our first year of offering a BMX Series.  In fact, we think it may be the only organized freestyle bmx series in New England...so you are a part of something really special!

First off, the BMX Series is about riding, not racing. This series is just a way to get everyone together and on the same page..…a way to celebrate and enjoy our common interests. BMX riding is about self expression and challenging yourself and that should be your goal.  The series is also about learning the proper respect not just for the beautiful place that we live, but for all places. Plus respect for each other, that’s a big one too.

So, here’s a little game plan for you and your family both on contest day and work days. The first two contests are a little different. Keep reading and you’ll see why. After those two you’ll be able to settle into a routine that’s familiar and easy. We try to keep it that way so that all you guys have to do is ride your bikes. If you see ways we can improve, let us know. We’re always open to your suggestions.

First Contest
The contest begins at 5:30pm. If you can, try to arrive by 4:30 or 5:00 at the latest. From there head to the registration table. Unlike the mountain bike series, there will be no numbers.  You simply need to check in and let them know you are there and ready to go.

We hope there’s gonna be a lotta kids at this contest, so be prepared to deal with a little anxiety…..that’s totally normal. Take our word for it, once your kid gets on the park their attention is totally focused on riding their bike and the worries that abound before the contest will just disappear. Stay positive with your kids… they might need it. While we can't have you on the park while the kids ride, we absolutely want you to ride with the kids and learn more about bmx riding.  It reallys is one of the coolest forms of cycling...it inspires creativity and instills amazing confidence in a kid after they nail a trick for the first time!

Here are two small notes on riding with your child. The first is to stay POSITIVE! Yelling and criticism are completely out of place in this program. Those of you new to the SHOCK Bike Series will probably find the overwhelmingly relaxed attitude a refreshing change. Remember, it’s not about competition unless you decide as a family to make it so. The second point about riding with your child is that you need to be incredibly aware of what’s going on around you, namely, other riders.

Lastly, there’s usually an awards party after the contest where all the riders can hang out, rub elbows, trade war stories, and perhaps win some free schwag from our supporters. This big gab session is just as much fun, if not more than the contest itself. Stay tuned to the series websites (www.haybikesenjava.com or www.mjbl.net ) because the location of the party changes from time to time.

The website is also a place where many if not all of your questions can be answered. We devote a lot of time and energy towards putting information online so that you can access it, so please recognize it for the valuable resource that it has become. We do encourage you to call, but only if necessary.

Second Contest
For contest #2, we also request that you make an attempt to arrive early, by 4:45 at least. On this day we’ll be taking pictures to present to the series sponsors as a thank-you for their support of the program. Please make every effort to attend this race.

Third and Fourth Contest
Arriving by 5:00-5:15 at the remaining races should give you plenty of time to park, unload bikes, check in, think about your jam and get ready. Each week offers a chance to showcase new tricks and create a new run within the skatepark.  Therefore, practice time outside of the contest night is crucial.

Work Days
We are so fortunate to have a skatepark like we have right here in the midcoast.  Having this part is in large part due to the very hardwork of a number of individuals who still ride the park on a daily basis.  Like anything made with wood, it needs to be repaired every now and then.  So, a couple of times throughout the year we will host work days at the park where we will make much needed repairs and perhaps even some improvements.

That’s it for right now. We are at your disposal to answer any questions or listen to any feedback. Thanks in advance for joining the family. This summer’s going to be a blast!
